Did you know?

South Dakota became U.S. territory back in 1803 because of the Louisiana Purchase. In 1861 it was considered Dakota territory. It wasn’t until November 2, 1889, that South Dakota became its own state. No one actually knows if it was the 39th or 40th state. We just know that it was in fact, one of the two. Because of the alphabetical order, North Dakota is generally listed at number 39 and South Dakota is generally listed at 40. There was actually a pretty large controversy over which would become a state first. President Benjamin Harrison took it upon himself to shuffle the bills and sign them randomly, making the order non-recordable.
South Dakota is known for its 60-foot-tall sculptures of the faces of Roosevelt, Washington, Jefferson, and Lincoln. The carving of Mount Rushmore began on October 4, 1927, and lasted until October 31, 1941. Over 400 people worked on this sculpture, and there wasn’t a single fatality; even though there are 506 steps to reach the top. The project cost the U.S. $989,992.32, almost $1 Million. That would be why they didn’t follow through with creating the sculptures all the way down to the president’s waistlines.
