Did you know?

Alabama was the 22nd state to join the USA on December 14, 1819. With a population of 4.8 million people, it ranks as 24th most populous. It’s been nicknamed the “Cotton State” or the “Heart of Dixie.”
It was within Alabama, in 1955, that Rosa Parks started her civil rights movement when she refused to give up her seat at the front of the bus. Though Parks wasn’t the first African American woman to refuse her seat on the bus, her defiance became a huge symbol in the civil rights movement. Her bravery led to the beginning of the nationwide efforts to end racial segregation.
Alabama also happens to be home to the largest cast-iron statue in the world. This is a 120,000lb, 56-foot statue of Vulcan, the Roman God of fire and forge. It sits on top of a 123-foot pedestal in the Vulcan Park and Museum. Italian artist Giuseppe Moretti designed Vulcan from local iron in 1904. Vulcan has overlooked Birmingham from the top of Red Mountain since the 1930s.
