Back in 1861, Gem state wasn’t even called by Idaho. Originally, the land was considered Colorado Territory. Idaho became its own territory in 1863 and was declared the 43rd state on July 3, 1890. The Gem State gets its nickname from the 72 different types of precious stones it produces.
 The state seal for Idaho is the only one in the United States that was designed by a woman. Emma Edwards Green entered a competition for the honor in 1891 but only used her initials.
