In October of 1871, a fire erupted in a barn in Chicago, Illinois. For over 24 hours, the fire burned throughout the city, killing 300 people; though only 120 bodies were found. The fire left many others without homes. The rain eventually put the fire out over 24 hours later. By then the fire had already burnt through 17,500 buildings within almost 75 miles worth of streets. The Chicago water tower was one of the only buildings to survive the Great Fire. Now it is a landmark, that inspired the design of White Castle restaurants.
