Maryland, nicknamed “The Old Line State”, was founded in 1632. In 1781, Maryland was the 7th state to ratify the Articles of Confederation, after the United States won the American Revolutionary War in 1783. Annapolis was the countries capital for less than a year. Eventually, they gave up part of their land to create Washington D.C.
11 years after Harriet Tubman used Maryland as part of the underground railroad, the tension between the North and South was strong enough to begin the civil war. It wasn’t until 1864 that they abolished slavery in the state of Maryland.
