Mississippi was the 20th state to join the union back in December of 1817. The state capital, Jackson, was named after General Andrew Jackson after his victory in the Battle of New Orleans in January of 1815. The state is named after the famous Mississippi River. “Mississippi” is derived from “Misi Sipi” which means “Big River”. Spanish explorers called it “Rio Grande” which also translates to “Big River”. The river is 2,340 miles long. It is home to over 300 species of fish and over 300 species of birds. It is also home to about 145 species of amphibians and about 50 species of mammals. Despite the river, Mississippi is the state 90% of the farm-raised catfish in the United States.
