Nebraska was the 37th state admitted into the union on March 1, 1867. It happened to be two years after the Civil war ended. The state capital of Nebraska started out as Omaha. When it gained its statehood the capital was changed to Lancaster, which was later renamed Lincoln, after President Abraham Lincoln. The renaming took place after Lincoln’s assassination. They were also counting on Confederate sympathizers to vote against moving the state capital to a town named after the man who ended slavery. The plan was a dud, because they did in fact move the capital.
The famous drink we call Kool-Aid was invented in Hastings, Nebraska. Edwin Perkins is the man behind it all. He originally called it “Fruit Smack”. The syrup that made Fruit Smack was one of the most popular products Perkins had created, though transporting it in glass bottles meant most of the product broke during transit. This is when Perkins created the powder that we use today and renamed it “Kool-Aid”.
