On November 11, 1889, Washington became the 42nd state. It was named after George Washington and is the only state to be named after a president. Mount Rainer, located in Washington, is the highest peak in all of the continental U.S. It practically sores above Seattle. The mountain was originally called Tacoma or Tahoma, meaning “the source of nourishment”. It wasn’t until 1792 when Captain George Vancouver sailed into Puget sound and named it after a friend of his, Peter Rainer. Rainer was a Navy officer in the revolutionary war.
